The part of a URL, or web address, following the domain name (e.g. duke.edu) is commonly referred to as the alias. The content types which are intended to allow a user to see each individual node as a stand-alone page (as opposed to being seen in a view with the other nodes of that type) have an alias pattern defined. Each node of that type will have an automatically generated alias which follows that pattern.
Each of these patterns end with a variation of the node title. For example, if you create a Basic page with a title of The Tortoise Versus the Hare, the alias which is generated to follow the defined pattern will be /tortoise-versus-hare (note the omission of the from the alias). Below is a list of content types and the alias pattern defined for each:
