Checking a Page for Accessibility Issues

Each site managed by Trinity Web Support includes the web accessibility checker Editoria11y Accessibility Checker. When logged in, users with an editing role will see an icon in the lower-right corner of the page which indicates whether or not the page being viewed includes any accessibility issues or potential issues.

the editorially icons.
The icon indicating no issues (left) vs the icon indicating there are (8) issues to check.

A blue circle with a check mark indicates there are no issues. A yellow circle means there may be an issue; the number within the yellow circle indicates how many issues or potential issues exist on the page. In both cases, the tab to the left of the circle provides a way to scan the heading structure and alternative text of any images embedded on the page. When issue(s) exist, the tab to the right of the yellow circle can be clicked to traverse the page and review each issue.

By default, Editoria11y will indicate on the page where potential issues exist by a circular yellow icon with a question mark the editorially icon indicating an issue.. The state of these icons can be toggled off (hidden) or on (shown) by clicking the circular accessibility checker icon in the lower-right corner of the page.

When you hover over a yellow icon indicating a potential issue, you will see details about the issue and steps to fix the problem:

the Editoria11y dialog explaining an issue and how to fix it.
The Editoria11y issue dialog.

In the example above, the accessibility checker has flagged a skipped heading: the first heading on the page—the page title—is a heading one, so the next heading on the page should be a heading two.

Once all of the issues have been fixed, the Editoria11y icon at lower-right will change from yellow to blue, with the check mark indicating there are no issues to report.

Sometimes an issue will be flagged that needs to be checked manually. For example, when a video is embedded on the page, Editoria11y will flag it with a reminder that videos need to have captioning. These indicators can be dismissed by clicking the “Ignore this manual check” button in the issue dialog. Note that this only hides the icon for the current editor—other editors will still see this flagged as an issue to manually check.
