Creating a Custom Alias

In some cases, an editor will want to customize the URL alias, so that it follows a pattern other than the predefined pattern. The typical scenario is when there is a block which is designated to show on all pages which have alias that followes a specific pattern.

For example, if the automated alias is /undergraduate-requirements, an editor might want to use a custom alias such as /undergraduate/current-students/requirements so that any blocks which are designated to show on the pages whose alias begins with /undergraduate/current-students will be displayed.

To assign a custom alias, in the URL Alias section in the right-hand column of the editing interface, uncheck the Generate automatic URL alias checkbox, then enter the custom alias in the URL alias text field:

the URL alias section of the editing sidebar.

Note: It is possible to add a custom alias for a node which has already been created and which has an automated alias by editing the node and following the steps above.

When a node’s alias is updated, a redirect is automatically created from the old alias to the new one. This will ensure that users who have the old address bookmarked, or who discover the page via a Google/Bing search before their indexes are refreshed, will be redirected to the correct address.
