Editor Tips & Tricks

  • For every Drupal site we support, there is a staging site where you can learn the editing tools and try things out without affecting the production (public-facing) site. To access your staging site, simply add -staging or -staging.trinity to your production web address, for example:

    department.duke.edudepartment-staging.trinity.duke.edu
    center.econ.duke.educenter-staging.trinity.duke.edu

To access the your staging site, you must be on the Duke network or connected to the Duke VPN. If you cannot find or login to your staging site, please contact trinitywebsupport@duke.edu.

  • Save early, save often: Users are logged out of the editing interface after 30 minutes of inactivity; be sure to save your work within that time so you do not lose your changes.
  • Enter starts a new paragraph; Shift + Enter starts a new line (i.e. a line break).
  • To make text bold, highlight the text and press Ctrl + B (⌘ + B on Mac); to make text italic, press Ctrl + I (⌘ + I on Mac). The same key commands will remove this formatting from text that is bold or italic.
  • To invoke the Link dialog, highlight the text to link and press Ctrl + K (⌘ + K on Mac).
  • It is not necessary to highlight an entire line to change its format (e.g. Heading 2 to Heading 3); simply place your cursor anywhere in the line and select a new format from the Format menu:
the format menu opened.
  • It is generally best practice to size and crop images before adding them via the editor. Be sure to use the aspect ratio and dimensions of one of the pre-configured image display modes.
  • Click the sidebar toggle icon to the right of the Save button to toggle the state of the sidebar panel: Hiding the sidebar when not in use will increase the size of the Body and other formatted text fields.

  • Each time you save your changes, a new version is created — use revisions to restore a previous version.
